What are the different sizes?

PKU cooler is a concentrated, ready-to-drink protein substitute which is available in three pack sizes:

• PKU cooler10 contains the equivalent of 10 grams of protein
• PKU cooler15 contains the equivalent of 15 grams of protein
• PKU cooler20 contains the equivalent of 20 grams of protein

Who is PKU cooler for?

PKU cooler is for children and adults with PKU. It is suitable from 3 years of age and so can be taken through early childhood into adulthood, including pregnancy. Your dietitian will advise when is best for you or your child to start PKU cooler.

Why do I need to use PKU cooler instead of continuing with a second stage protein substitute?

As we grow our nutritional requirements change, and so it is important that protein substitutes for people with PKU be tailored to meet these requirements. PKU cooler is such a protein substitute; it can help in meeting you or your child’s protein, vitamin, mineral and trace element requirements; replacing second stage protein substitutes (such as PKU gel/PKU squeezie) as we grow.

PKU cooler contains more protein (than first stage protein substitutes) in a lower volume so can help to make taking the full amount each day easier. A ready-to-drink liquid protein substitute like PKU cooler, introduced in early childhood, may be easily taken and encourage independence.

How much PKU cooler do I need?

The amount of PKU cooler needed will depend on a variety of factors including age, weight and PKU control. Initially, the amount needed may only be small but it will increase with age to support growth. Your dietitian will advise exactly how much PKU cooler will be needed each day.

How do I use PKU cooler?

PKU cooler is easy to use…..

1. Shake the pouch with the cap still on to mix the contents well.
2. Take off the cap and drink directly from the pouch.
3. Drinking PKU cooler by itself does not provide enough fluid for you so water (or another permitted drink) should be taken straight after PKU cooler.

What flavour is PKU cooler available in?

PKU cooler is available in 5 different flavour options, indicated by the colour of the lid; white, orange, purple, yellow and red. These are known as the PKU cooler colours. Some people with PKU choose their favourite colour to take all the time, while some prefer having a variety of flavours.
